The trail is roughly 6km (3 and 3/4 miles) in length. You can do the loop as shown on the map, visit the sites individually and listen to the SoundCloud files in situ, or just enjoy them from the comfort of your home if you would prefer.

Capturing local stories

This project aimed to record oral histories from local ex-miners and their families. The core interest is what life was like for working-class mining families, both down the mines and in the home. As part of the project, an oral history recording archive has been established for the South Derbyshire Mining Preservation Group.

Voices from the past, melodies for today

Excerpts of conversations will have been edited into short ‘radio ballad’ style recordings, including original music composed by local folk musician, Mel Biggs. These recordings have been edited into Sound Cloud tracks, and link up to a QR code which is available on this website and physical leaflets.

Start your adventure...

Beginning at Sharpe's Pottery Museum, there will be an interactive digital walking map of the sites, starting with a digital projection of a miner in a booth to set you on your travels. Maps will be available in physical or digital form ready for the Derbyshire Makes Festival, Saturday 25th April.
